The landscape design for the new Thompson Elementary School aims to capture the spirit of interactive learning and commitment to sustainability that is at the heart of its local residents in Arlington, MA. To complement the welcoming new building designed by HMFH Architects, strong formal walks connect the school with the community; native plants serve as local habitat and educational playground; school gardens provide connection to food sources; and a series of custom, high-backed classroom benches bring the learning experience outdoors. All design components were selected for combability with sustainable design principles and were essential to Thompson’s certification as a Massachusetts Collaborative for High Performance School.
